In the midst of a Bavarian mountain- paradise, at the foot of the mountain Watzmann, locals, tourists and refugees meet at “Café Waldluft”, a traditional, but now neglected, tourist hotel in Berchtesgaden. Once a popular destination for tourists from all over the world, the hotel is now used to house refugees from all corners of the globe. A few years ago, innkeeper “Mama Flora” offered the use of her Hotel to accommodate refugees. Since then, taking a pragmatic and “godly” approach, she and her cook have looked after the refugees – most of them young men from Syria, Afghanistan and countries in Africa. With a picture postcard backdrop, the men try to establish a life away from war and conflict, and come to realise that access to their new homeland often remains barred. Germany is a beautiful country, they say, but they miss their family. They’re homesick and they worry about their loved ones. What do they have to do, in order to really arrive? And what does the vast term “homeland” actually mean to an individual? Given the increasing hysteria surrounding the refugee debate in Germany and other countries, Matthias Koßmehl’s film is an exciting contribution, and one that doesn’t give xenophobia any space. Without passing judgment he takes an empathetic and humorous look at the way the protection- seekers and their helpers attempt to cope with a sometimes trying everyday life.
With this prize- winning debut work, Koßmehl has created a must- see portrait of an unconventional community. Deutschland. 01: 1. Director: Matthias Koßmehl.
